I think that Local Government in particular can have a convening role, bringing people together to solve problems. The momentum to use the web as a catalyst to make connections, build on existing social networks and create new ones is exciting. I like the work the <a href="http://www.youngfoundation.org.uk" rel="nofollow">Young Foundation</a>is doing to stir up more of this kind of activity and report on innovation already underway. The power of social capital to support and generate well being is well documented (eg: Putnam: Bowling Alone). Local authorities and others need to keep the pot boiling and support activity that will enable the emergence of new and unexpected support networks.
