By all means use these new fangled cloud applications.... just don't rely on them.

Live on the EDGE of the network, not in the cloud (as Danny O'Brien might advise http://www.oblomovka.com/entries/2008/07/16)

I think a key issue here as well is making sure that any offline data is also backed up! My recent experience with my laptop carking it (Acer still haven't turned up the goods after nearly two weeks - grr - but that's another story) could have been a total disaster, however the fact that I had my personal data on an external hard drive made it an irritation. On top of that I also keep regular backups to DVD of all personal information including photos, videos and music.

What concerns me is that people will use episodes like this as excuses not to use interesting web services like these. Just a bit of risk management is required - ie keeping those backups!

Wise advice.

And it's not only backup procedures you need to worry about , it's their balance sheets.

All the off-site backups in the world won't help you if they're held by the Officla Receivers of a startup you relied on.

I don't know if it is rumour or fact but I recall reading that GoogleDrive (Google's online storage solution) will feature an auto sync with offline data stores, particularly for Google Docs.

I also agree with your views on social bookmarking. I've only been using Delicious for about a month now but it's a great way for me to be able to keep track of my bookmarks anywhere. I can find something of interest at work, bookmark it in Delicious and then subsequently view it at home. Simultaneously, if I'm round someone elses house I can log on to Delicious there for a "Check out these cool sites" session.
