Hi Doreen

I'll take your second point first, if I may. It might seem a little odd that while blog posts are presented in reverse-chronological order (ie with the latest first), comments are presented as a threaded conversation, with the latest at the bottom. However, this is the established practice across virtually all blogs that I've seen, and they do make the following of the conversation a little easier.

As for how to get your blog started, registering a domain name is a good thing to do. The easiest way to get going is to use a service such as WordPress.com. If you visit that site, you can register a blog for free, and get posting straight away. It really is very easy. You'll also be able to use your domain name there, so it points to your new blog. If you'd like some more help, drop me a line via email - db@davepress.net.

As for a book, if you are using WordPress then WordPress for Dummies is probably a good start! See http://bit.ly/wpfordummies

I have a suggestion: How about you put the most current comments at the top of the page and oldest ones at bottom? It would sure help someone like myself trying to figure out what's new. Thanks.

I write a nationally syndicated column (for past 8 years or so) and want to start a blog. I am a writer, not a techie and therefore know little or less than little about how to get started. I have a domain name put aside and have done nothing with it. First question, can I use that as my blog site??

Also, is there a simple, current book (or some other means) to get me started that is written for someone who is very low tech. Other suggestions?

Please feel free to email me. Thanks for all your help and sharing of knowledge to help a neophyte.

Dave, you're a legend. Hadn't heard of cocomment, the advice on river of news/scanning rather than reading is reassuring as I am expanding my reading list rapidly, and the rest of it has made me feel like I know what I am doing after all

Question on step 3, if I use a blogging platform and have my own URL, do I need to pay for a hosting service? Or, does blogger (or wordpress) host it for me?

The only part of my site will be the blog for now. I will add other content outside of the blog down the road.
